Ingredients

6 ingredients to make baby waffles

Here’s what I included in this recipe or what you need to make it.

Self Raising Flour

White self raising flour to give the mixture a lift.

Rolled oats

a bowl of rolled oats and some on a wooden spoon

I used fine rolled oats, not jumbo oats. These will be easier to break up in the food processor as you don’t want massive lumps. They also give a little fibre to the waffles and help thicken the mixture.

Milk

Use full fat cows milk as this is best for babies. If you can’t use cows milk then non dairy milk types will work well too.

Cinnamon

Optional to add a little sweetness without using added sugar.

Egg

Baking powder

How to make baby waffles

Step 1. Add the dry ingredients to the blender followed by the egg and milk

How to serve waffles to babies?

6 months + Cut into strips about the size of two fingers. Ensure they are crispy waffles so they are less likely to stick to the inside of the mouth and cause gagging.

9 months + Cut into smaller bite pieces, assuming they have mastered the pincer grip.

18 months + You can offer the either of the both methods or as a whole mini waffle

Swaps and substitutions

Milk – You can use any type of milk you like, dairy or non dairy

Cinnamon – If you don’t want to use cinnamon then simply take out

Flour – use self raising wholewheat or gluten free flour

Oats – Use sweet potato puree or mashed potato instead

Recipe FAQ

how to cut waffles for babies

You can cut them any shape you like. Using a large waffle plate you will want to cut each waffle into 4 squares so they are an easy size to manage. You can also buy mini waffle makers that are smaller in size but you will find it takes longer to cook all the mixture.

How long will waffle batter keep in the fridge

You can keep the batter in the fridge for up to 24 hrs and then make the waffles. I recommended taking the mixture out of the fridge some 20 minutes before you want to make the waffles as the mixture will have thickened up.

Can i use honey on waffles for my baby?

If your baby is under 1 year then don’t use honey but an alternative. However I won’t recommend giving additional sugar to your baby anyhow.

How long can you store homemade waffles?

Once cool, store in an airtight container in the fridge for 2 – 3 days. Alternatively you can freeze them and they will keep for about 3 months in the freezer.

How do I reheat?

The best way to reheat them is to pop them in the toaster or oven to retain the crispness.

You can reheat from frozen too. Here are the best ways to do this:

Oven – heat to 180c and reheat for about 4- 5 mins until they are hot all the way through.

Toaster – Pop in the toaster on a low heat for about 1 minute

Microwave – reheat on full power for about 20 seconds.
